To facilitate situational awareness, the GDL 50 can also receive ADS-B position reports directly from other aircraft in the vicinity. In the USA, 2 frequencies (978 UAT and 1090 ES) are approved by the FAA for ADS-B transmissions, so the GDL 50 series offers access to both frequencies. This gives you the most complete view of all nearby ADS-B "Out" targets. Your compatible³ display will alert you to audible and visual traffic targets. Audio voice alerts announce "Traffic, Traffic" so you can look immediately.

To further extend your display's traffic monitoring capability (on compatible displays), the GDL 50 receiver also provides access to our TargetTrend motion tracking technology. This feature gives you a faster, more intuitive way of judging the direction and closure rate of intruder targets in relation to your aircraft's position. So, rather than a fixed "snapshot" of the traffic situation, TargetTrend provides a more dynamic "speed-based" display that shows which aircraft trajectories are most likely to converge with yours. For example, if traffic is ahead of you and following the same path, but at a slower speed, the motion vector will point away from the indicated flight direction to indicate that you are overtaking the traffic. The result: you can make more targeted avoidance decisions more quickly.

For airport operations, TerminalTraffic technology (part of Garmin's comprehensive suite of terminal safety solutions) displays ADS-B-equipped surface targets on your aircraft's SafeTaxi® diagram, so you can see traffic on congested runways and taxiways. ADS-B-equipped aircraft in flight are easily distinguished from ground vehicles and taxiing aircraft, which are displayed with distinct colors and symbols. In this way, TerminalTraffic provides a clear, real-time overview of surface activity in the airport environment.

Integrated GPS and Attitude sensors for SVX ™ display

In addition to its weather and road capabilities, your GDL 50 function package includes an integrated WAAS GPS receiver. This enables GDL 50 to provide extremely accurate aircraft position, speed and altitude information to your compatible mobile device app. What's more, integrated attitude sensors allow selected Garmin aviation handhelds and apps with our SVX synthetic vision technology to serve as backup attitude reference4 during your flights. Battery life

The GDL 50 is a true all-rounder. A built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery enables the GDL 50 to operate for up to 8 hours on a single charge. And for power-connected operation, you can plug it into your aircraft's 12 V socket using the supplied adapter cable, or use the microUSB port on the side of the receiver.
