The Weather Observer
Continuous updates from SiriusXM satellites - accessible by ground and air - can help you make better flight decisions, faster. The powerful satellites of the SiriusXM network provide seamless coverage across the American continent and its coastal regions, as well as southern Canada. Choose from available SiriusXM Aviation weather packages, which provide METAR data and NEXRAD animated images, as well as up-to-date reports on precipitation, lightning, upper winds, upper echoes, turbulence, frost levels, TFRs and more.

Alternatively, the GDL 52 portable receiver also provides subscription-free access to weather information from the ADS-B Flight Information Service (FIS-B) ADS-B. With this, your compatible devices3 can display animated graphical weather as well as METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs and other ADS-B-related features. And to help you maintain the most up-to-date weather picture, your GDL 52 receiver can put the weather on hold from ADS-B and/or SiriusXM when your display device is on standby or switched off. It then updates automatically when you switch the display back on.

By simply connecting a Bluetooth® headset or compatible audio panel to GDL 52, you can wirelessly listen to your choice of high-quality audio entertainment channels provided by SiriusXM¹. You can access volume settings and station selection via your mobile app or compatible Garmin aviation device. If you prefer, a 3.5 mm stereo audio jack on the side of your GDL 52 lets you easily provide a wired audio output connection to an auxiliary device or your aircraft's audio panel.

Spot potential threats to traffic
To facilitate situational awareness, the GDL 52 can also receive ADS-B position reports directly from other aircraft in the vicinity. In the USA, two frequencies (978 UAT and 1090 ES) are approved by the FAA for ADS-B transmissions, so the GDL 52 offers access to both frequencies. This gives you the most complete view of all nearby ADS-B "Out" targets. Your compatible monitor4 will alert you to audible and visual traffic targets.

Rather than a fixed "snapshot" of the traffic situation, TargetTrend provides a more dynamic "speed-based" display that shows which aircraft trajectories are most likely to converge with yours. For example, if traffic is ahead of you and following the same path, but at a slower speed, the motion vector will point away from the indicated flight direction to indicate that you are overtaking the traffic. The result: you can make more targeted avoidance decisions more quickly.

For airport operations, TerminalTraffic technology (part of Garmin's comprehensive suite of terminal safety solutions) displays ADS-B-equipped surface targets on your aircraft's SafeTaxi® diagram, so you can see traffic on congested runways and taxiways. ADS-B-equipped aircraft in flight are easily distinguished from ground vehicles and taxiing aircraft, which are displayed with distinct colors and symbols. In this way, TerminalTraffic provides a clear, real-time overview of airport surface activity.
