For pilots flying our G3X Touch glass display systems in their experimental / amateur or light sport aircraft, the compact GDL 50R remote-mount receiver brings a range of safety-enhancing features to the cockpit. It connects your flight displays with subscription-free graphical weather content and advanced dual-band traffic services that are continuously uplinked via the US ADS-B network. What's more, you can also use our Connext wireless connectivity to stream this information to multiple Garmin in-flight handhelds (including the aera® 660, aera 796 or aera 795), as well as iPad® tablets and mobile devices with the Garmin Pilot ™ app.

Works with a variety of devices
GDL 50R provides multiple display outputs and display options. It not only works with your G3X Touch avionics, but can also communicate simultaneously with the Garmin Pilot app running on your iPad tablet or compatible mobile devices². Similarly, if you're traveling with a 660, 796 or 795 series portable aircraft, you can also access the receiver's data links (via a wired or wireless connection) with these products. In fact, GDL 50R can support up to 2 Connext wireless connections for your devices while simultaneously providing wired connections for 2 other devices.

Keeping track of aviation weather (US)
Equipped with ADS-B "In" data link technology, the GDL 50R receiver enables you to receive weather information without a FIS-B (Flight Information Service) subscription in the USA. This means your compatible devices² can display animated weather information, as well as METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs and other ADS-B features. And to help you maintain the most up-to-date weather picture, your GDL 50R receiver can put ADS-B weather data on hold when your display is idle or switched off. It then updates automatically when you switch the screen back on.

For airport operations, TerminalTraffic technology (part of Garmin's comprehensive range of terminal safety solutions) displays ADS-B-equipped surface targets on your aircraft's SafeTaxi® diagram, so you can see what's happening on congested runways and taxiways. ADS-B-equipped aircraft in flight are easily distinguished from ground vehicles and taxiing aircraft, which are displayed with distinct colors and symbols. In this way, TerminalTraffic provides a clear, real-time overview of surface activity in the airport environment.

Spot potential threats to traffic
To facilitate situational awareness, the GDL 50R can also receive ADS-B position reports directly from other aircraft in the vicinity. In the USA, 2 frequencies (978 UAT and 1090 ES) are approved by the FAA for ADS-B transmissions, so the GDL 50R offers access to both frequencies. This gives you the most complete view of all nearby ADS-B "Out" targets. Your compatible³ display will alert you to audible and visual traffic targets. Audio voice alerts announce "Traffic, Traffic" so you can look immediately.
