This book presents the issue of airport noise pollution as objectively as possible. It sets out a number of scientific, technical, legal and political facts. It also outlines a number of strategies for limiting the noise pollution associated with airport operations.
Around 1,400 airlines operate more than 25,000 aircraft worldwide, carrying 3.3 billion passengers a year from 3,900 airports in airspace managed by 173 air navigation services.
Noise pollution is affecting an ever-increasing number of citizens, and for a variety of reasons, the situation is unlikely to improve.
- Increasing air traffic
Forecasts drawn up in 2014 point to a fleet of 41,000 aircraft carrying 6.6 billion passengers by 2032.
- Increase in night-time traffic
A significant proportion of movements take place in the evening or during the night, with repercussions on the sleep of local residents.
- Increased public awareness and responsiveness to environmental problems
Nuisance (of whatever kind) is increasingly considered unbearable by the majority of people, who are more systematic in questioning the public authorities about it.
Even if today's aircraft have much better acoustic performance than their predecessors, the advent of silent aircraft is not foreseeable in the medium term.
The only way out is therefore to implement appropriate accompanying policies (insulation, buy-back of buildings) and controls (land-use planning, operating restrictions).
