Aeromodeling encompasses all disciplines whose aim is to fly an aeromodel, a true flying machine in miniature. This aeromodel can take the form of a plane, a glider, a helicopter or a hot-air balloon, for the most common types of machine... But it can also be a figment of the imagination... or a replica of an existing or former flying machine. In this case, we speak of a flying model.

A drone is a remote-controlled model aircraft, i.e. without a pilot on board. It carries a payload that enables it to carry out a wide variety of missions: surveillance, intelligence, mapping, transport and video.

For over twenty years now, drones have been developed and used in France in a military context, for surveillance and intelligence missions. In recent years, drone technology has been adapted to the civilian sector.

The anarchic use of drones in the civilian sector has necessitated a regulatory evolution of this type of aircraft, beyond the recreational use of aeromodels in the historical context of model aviation.
