Garmin Aviation D2™ Air X15 and D2™ Mach 2
For nearly twenty years, Garmin Aviation has established itself as a major and indispensable player in the aviation market. Its famous smartwatches for pilots have become a valuable companion during flights, as we saw in 2022 with the D2™ Air X10 and D2™ Mach 1 series. But today, the American brand raises the bar once again by introducing the new D2™ Air X15 and D2™ Mach 2 watches, which will accompany you through every phase of flight — from preparation to route tracking — while adapting perfectly to your daily life. Let’s now discover these two new watches, whose features and characteristics will leave you speechless.
D2 Mach 2: The pinnacle of Garmin Aviation technology
Let’s talk about the D2™ Mach 2 series, which logically draws inspiration from the D2™ Mach 1 range. It clearly showcases a premium aeronautical design with two distinct versions: the D2™ Mach 2 Titanium (47 mm diameter) and the D2™ Mach 2 Carbon DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon). The titanium or carbon bezels ensure exceptional durability, while the sapphire glass resists scratches and protects the 1.4-inch (approximately 3.5 cm) AMOLED touchscreen, which remains perfectly readable in bright sunlight or the dim light of a night flight.
Flight tools designed for professional and leisure pilots
You can truly consider this range as a real co-pilot, as it integrates a worldwide aeronautical database regularly updated by Garmin Aviation (if you need a quick tutorial, check out our video). But that’s far from all — in terms of new features, both D2™ Mach 2 models include Direct-to navigation, an HSI (Horizontal Situation Indicator), and quick access to weather information such as METAR, TAF, and NEXRAD. Regarding customizable flight parameters, pilots can set visibility, ceiling, and crosswind thresholds to receive dynamic alerts during flight. Additionally, since we consider it a true co-pilot, the range integrates the Garmin Pilot™ app, which allows you to transfer flight plans, update charts, receive real-time avionics data, and monitor your aircraft’s status via PlaneSync™. Your flights can also be automatically recorded and viewed on FlyGarmin.com to help you review and track your performance.
Voice and practical cockpit functions
As everyone knows, flight safety is paramount and should never, ever be neglected. Garmin has therefore introduced voice functions using its built-in speaker, microphone, and voice commands. This means that if you need weather information or want to select your destination, you won’t have to take your hands off the controls — simply speak. We’ll see how well it performs over engine noise! As seen in the D2™ Mach 1 Pro, this series also features an LED flashlight adjustable to red or white, along with night vision — a helpful tool for nighttime operations. A useful tip: you can say “Start Fly Activity” to launch your flight plan, “Direct to” to navigate directly to your destination airport, and “Show me the METAR” to display current weather conditions.
A watch for flying… and for everyday life
Although this range is primarily designed for aviation, Garmin hasn’t forgotten about everyday life. Outside the cockpit, these watches become full-fledged health and performance tracking tools, monitoring heart rate, respiration, stress, sleep, ECG (sinus rhythm detection), SpO₂ (oxygen saturation), and Body Battery™ energy levels. On the fitness side, the D2™ Mach 2 offers structured strength plans, daily workout suggestions, and real-time endurance tracking. Battery life is also impressive: the Titanium version provides 14 days in smartwatch mode and 37 hours with GPS, while the Carbon model delivers 26 days and 58 hours respectively. Each watch comes with its matching strap and an additional silicone sports band.
D2 Air X15: The modern pilot’s watch
Now let’s look at the new D2™ Air X15, considered the successor to the D2™ Air X10. It features a 45 mm stainless steel case, a black silicone QuickFit™ band, and a bright 1.4-inch AMOLED display. It stands out for its sleek, elegant design while remaining durable thanks to its Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3. A perfect watch for everyday wear, no matter the place. Two bezel colors are available: Slate and Silver.
Advanced aeronautical features
Just like its bigger sister, the D2™ Air X15 includes essential flight tools — METAR, TAF (for more info, check out our video Flight Plan Preparation), HSI, Direct-to navigation, nearby airports, altimeter, and customizable safety alerts. It can connect to Garmin Pilot™ to synchronize flight plans and avionics alerts, and it records flights via FlyGarmin.com. A special feature: it provides a morning aviation report with weather updates for your favorite airport.
Smart connectivity and voice commands
Indeed, the D2™ Air X15 also inherits Garmin Aviation’s signature features — a built-in speaker and microphone, wrist-based calling, voice assistant, and geo-referenced voice notes. It also includes an LED flashlight (white or red) and night vision for cockpit readability. Battery life differs slightly: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and 20 hours in GPS mode. You can use commands such as “Start Fly Activity,” “Direct to,” and “Show me the METAR.”
Wellness and daily performance
To round off the series, it offers comprehensive fitness features — heart rate and sleep tracking, respiration, stress monitoring, and energy tracking via Body Battery™. It also supports ECG (availability varies by region, but France should benefit) and GarminCoach for personalized training, as well as the Jet Lag Adviser feature to help you stay sharp when crossing time zones.
What’s new compared to previous Garmin Aviation models
Compared to the D2™ Air X10, the D2™ Air X15 steps up in hardware, offering a slightly larger format (45 mm vs. 43 mm), a brighter AMOLED display, upgraded health and training sensors, and a significantly improved battery life. It delivers a smoother user experience, richer health/fitness tracking, better readability, and longer endurance — though the D2™ Air X10 remains a solid budget-friendly option. As for the D2™ Mach 2, it’s a true evolution, featuring a completely new chassis, Elevate Gen 5 sensors, integrated mic and speaker, and enhanced multiband GPS. Thanks to these more accurate sensors, the watch is now water-resistant up to 40 meters. The screen bezels are slimmer, and battery life is greatly improved on the 51 mm version — up to 26 days in smartwatch mode and 58 hours in GPS. In short, the D2™ Mach 2 retains the full aviation arsenal of the D2™ Mach 1 but adds next-generation sensors, improved display ergonomics, additional features (mic/speaker, dive support), and greater autonomy — making it the most complete option for pilots seeking avionics performance and endurance.
