Pooleys
Founded in 1957 by Robert Pooley following his departure from the Royal Air Force, Pooleys is a family business led by the Pooley family since its creation. In 2007, Robert passed the leadership of the company to his son Sebastian. In 2005, Robert also established Pooley Sword Ltd, a company specializing in the manufacturing of British and Commonwealth military swords, as well as ceremonial swords sold worldwide. Pooley Sword Ltd operates from Shoreham Airport and Abbeydale in Sheffield.
Over the years, Pooleys has become a respected name in the aviation industry, not only in the UK but globally, as a leading manufacturer and publisher of aviation equipment, pilot training manuals, and flight guides. The company now markets over 2850 products worldwide, including many of the most recognized aviation brands.
Pooleys has made significant innovations in the aviation industry. In 1957, the company produced its first Knee Board, followed in 1962 by the publication of the first European Flight Guide, then in 1964 by the first UK Flight Guide. The first Computer CRP-1 was developed in 1964, with the collaboration of the Civil Aviation Authority and other partners, followed by the CRP-5 in 1966. These computers, especially the CRP-5, are now standard references for commercial pilot and ATPL training.
In 1974, Pooleys published its first technical book, "Aerobatics" (Airlife), and in 1995, the company took over the production of the Aviat series of Flight Computers. In 2000, the first ATPL manuals for airline pilots were published, and Pooleys launched the Pooleys Air Presentations series, intended for PPL flight schools. International expansion was also marked by the opening of the first store in Africa, at Grand Central Airport in Johannesburg, in June 2002, followed by the opening of the latest store at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2021.
Pooleys celebrated its 60th anniversary of publishing the Pooleys Flight Guide in the UK in 2022. In 2012, for the 50th anniversary of the Pooleys Guide, the company launched a digital version, Pooleys iPlates, available as an app for Apple and Android devices. Pooleys digital plates are now available on half a dozen different platforms. In 2022, Pooleys celebrates its 65th anniversary.
Certified ISO 9001, 14001, and 18001, Pooleys maintains strict quality and environmental standards in the design and manufacture of its products. The company is committed to standardizing the quality of training, teaching, and learning in flight schools across the UK. Aviation training publications are closely monitored by the CAA and the country's leading schools and instructors.
The experienced Pooleys team is available to provide detailed specifications and quotes for its entire product range, including custom equipment. With its own factory in the UK, the company is able to produce special products in small quantities with very short lead times and competitive prices.
